This year I took my summer vacation early and am now firmly back at work and, I hate to admit, am already dreaming about my next trip. Its hot here in Salt Lake City, 100 degrees and sunny pretty much every day, with no foreseeable end in sight. I am definitely missing a shady, breezy spot by the ocean with a good book and a glass of Rosé. Sigh.
Well, the universe must have realized I needed something to get me over this hump and well, the universe provided. A lovely book arrived in the mail just before I began googling last-minute vacation deals. Barefoot Luxury, by designer Sandra Espinet, is a collection of her high-end luxury projects in Mexico.
She begins each section with a color-specific pretty mood board and then goes into great detail about each project-
As a designer that also works mostly in a resort town now (Park City), and has worked in Hawaii in the past, I am always interested in how second-home designers are able to work within the confines of a local style and still express their own style leanings. I love Sandra’s use of natural materials and textures together with pops of bold, ocean-inspired color and local history or culture.
Here are a few of my favorite pages-
Love this dramatic live edge headboard together with the bright pillows. The ceiling beams are stunning-
Love the backs of these Spanish Colonial dining chairs upholstered in a geometric navy and white fabric together with the modern white pendants hanging overhead-
All this wall texture is to die for, and I love how she mixes the clean lines of the furniture and again this lovely ocean blue-
More amazing texture and color with clean-lined furniture with touches of local tradition-
This chunky suspended wood console paired with these delicate ocean-hued glass scones is such a lovely combination.
And well, then there are the images that are just ideal for some Monday morning fantasizing any day of the year…
So if you didn’t get your resort fix this year, I highly recommend some armchair travel with Sandra.
